UIDAI asks people to hide the first eight digits before sharing a photocopy, and every bank, landlord and school asks for the copy anyway. Most people do it with a marker pen.
Mask an Aadhaar copy →Free every day without an account on some tools. Your file is deleted the moment the job finishes.
The number is found and verified before anything is drawn over it — Aadhaar carries a check digit, so a twelve-digit number that is really a bank account or a reference is left alone. Only the first eight are covered: the last four are what the person receiving the copy uses to tell one Aadhaar from another, and covering all twelve gets the copy rejected.
The first eight, leaving the last four visible, which is the masked form UIDAI itself publishes.

Sharing the masked form is what UIDAI asks you to do wherever the full number is not required. Whether a particular office may ask for the full number is between you and that office.
